My Journey Through Tang Soo Do
Tang Soo Do has been more than just a martial art for me; it has been a journey of self-discovery, discipline, and growth. From the moment I first stepped into the dojo, I was introduced to a set of principles that have profoundly shaped my character and approach to life. These principles, embodied in the five codes, seven tenets, and 14 attitudes of Tang Soo Do, have guided me through both the challenges and triumphs of my martial arts journey.
The first principle I encountered was Loyalty to my Country. Loyalty instills a sense of pride and responsibility, reminding me that my actions reflect not just on myself but on my community and nation. This code has taught me to appreciate the freedoms and opportunities I have. Every time I bow to the flag at the beginning of class, I am reminded of the importance of loyalty and the role I play in upholding the values of my country.
Obedience to Parents and Elders is another fundamental code. This principle teaches respect and humility. By valuing the wisdom and experience of those who came before me, I learn to appreciate their guidance and apply it to my own life. This has strengthened my relationships with my family and mentors, helping me develop a deeper sense of empathy and understanding for others.
Friendship is a cornerstone of Tang Soo Do, and the code to Honor Friendship fosters mutual support. The bonds formed with friends create a supportive environment where we all strive to better ourselves. Through the ups and downs of training, my friends have been there to encourage and challenge me.
The code of No Retreat in Battle emphasizes perseverance and courage. Whether in training or in life, it encourages me to face challenges head-on and not give up, no matter how difficult the situation. This principle has been a guiding force during tough times, reminding me to stay resilient and determined. It has helped me build mental and physical strength, allowing me to tackle obstacles with confidence.
Finally, the principle of In Fighting, Choose with Sense and Honor underscores the importance of fighting with integrity and purpose. It reminds me that martial arts are not just about physical strength but about using that strength responsibly. I have learned to control my impulses and to engage in conflict only when necessary, always striving to resolve situations peacefully and with respect for others.
Beyond these codes, the Seven Tenets of Tang Soo Do further shape my practice and daily life. Integrity is about being honest and having strong moral principles. For me, it means staying true to my values and being accountable for my actions, both inside and outside the dojo. Practicing integrity has helped me build trust with others and maintain a clear conscience.
Concentration is essential for mastering techniques and achieving goals. It has taught me to focus my mind and energy on the task at hand, improving my performance in all areas of life.
Perseverance is the ability to keep going despite difficulties. This tenet has helped me overcome obstacles and stay committed to my training, even when progress seemed slow. Each time I faced a setback, I reminded myself of the importance of perseverance, allowing me to push through challenges and achieve goals that once seemed out of reach.
Respect and Obedience are fundamental to maintaining harmony and discipline within the dojo. They have taught me to value the hierarchy and traditions of Tang Soo Do, fostering a respectful learning environment. I have learned to show respect to my instructors and peers, recognizing that everyone has something to teach. This attitude of respect extends to all areas of my life, promoting positive interactions and relationships.
Self-control is about managing one's emotions and impulses. It has been crucial in helping me remain calm and composed, especially in high-pressure situations. Through rigorous training, I have developed the ability to control my reactions and make thoughtful decisions. This skill has been invaluable in my personal life, allowing me to handle stress and conflict effectively.
Humility involves recognizing that there is always more to learn. It keeps me grounded and open to new knowledge, ensuring continuous improvement. Practicing humility has taught me to appreciate the journey of learning and to seek out opportunities for growth. It has also fostered a sense of gratitude for the guidance and support I receive from others.
An Indomitable Spirit means having an unbreakable will. This tenet inspires me to push my limits and stay resilient, no matter the challenges I face. It has given me the strength to persevere through adversity and to approach each day with determination and optimism. This spirit has been a driving force in my journey with Tang Soo Do, motivating me to strive for excellence.
In addition to these tenets, the 14 Attitudes of Tang Soo Do further refine my approach to training and life. Being loyal to one's country extends beyond mere allegiance; it involves active participation in bettering the community and nation. This attitude encourages me to be a responsible citizen and contribute positively to society.
Be respectful to teachers and acknowledge their knowledge and effort in guiding us on our journey. Never kill without reason highlights the importance of valuing life and exercising restraint, promoting the responsible use of martial arts skills and resolving conflicts peacefully.
Never retreat in battle encourages perseverance and courage, pushing me to face difficulties head-on. In conflict, choice with sense and honor promotes the responsible and ethical use of martial arts, ensuring that actions are just and honorable.
Always finishing what you start reinforces the importance of commitment and follow-through, fostering a sense of accomplishment and reliability. Being a good loser teaches humility and the ability to learn from failures, using them as opportunities for growth. Being a good winner reminds me to remain gracious in victory, acknowledging the efforts of others.
Finally, Never take advantage of the weak promotes kindness and compassion, ensuring that I use my strength to help, not harm, others. This attitude emphasizes the ethical responsibility that comes with martial arts training.
Through my journey with Tang Soo Do, I have learned that martial arts is not just about physical prowess but about cultivating a strong and virtuous character. The principles of Tang Soo Do have become integral to my life, guiding me in every step of my journey.
